The before photo is familiar to anyone who's moved house: magnolia walls, grey carpet, one window, and a bare amber bulb dangling from the ceiling like the room gave up halfway. The Transformation
Before: four bare walls, wall-to-wall carpet, a window with a roller blind, and one lonely bulb. The back wall — the natural home for a TV — was doing absolutely nothing with itself. This is the photo the app started from.
After:same window, same blind, same doorway — and a back wall that now runs the entire room: floor-to-ceiling black panelling, glowing at its edges. The bulb became a brass-lit dome pendant. The carpet became polished concrete. And the blank wall became the best seat in the house's reason to exist.
The Design
A media wall lives or dies on one decision: commit or don't. This one commits.
The back wall is floor-to-ceiling matte black wall panelling, edged on all four sides with recessed LED strip lighting — so the whole black plane reads as floating, backlit, intentional. Dead centre, the 85-inch OLED TV mounts flush against the black, and directly beneath it the linear black gas fireplace burns behind glass — real flames, a log-effect bed, a polished black surround with no visible hearth, so fire and screen stack into one vertical composition. Below both, a matte black media unit runs the full width with concealed storage, and on either side of the TV, matte black floating shelvesrise in two lit tiers — LED-underlit, carrying black ceramic vases and monochrome geometric prints in black frames. Nothing up there is accidental; that's the point.
The room arranges itself around the wall like seating at a cinema: the low-profile black leather sofa on the left, an angular black armchair with brass legs turned three-quarters toward the screen, a thin black coffee table between them on the large black wool rug with its geometric pattern. Above, where the bare bulb hung, a large matte black dome pendant with a warm brass interior now anchors the seating area, flanked by two recessed linear black track rails running the ceiling's length. The carpet is gone — polished dark charcoal concrete reflects the firelight instead. One wall, fully committed, and the whole room reorganised itself around it.

Warmth enters through real flame, brass(pendant interior, armchair legs) and the LED glow tracing the wall's edges. Palette: black, black, and black — with fire. The white ceiling, window and door casing are what stop it being a cave: contrast needs its opposite.

Frequently Asked Questions
Won't a floor-to-ceiling black wall make the room feel smaller?
It does the opposite — if it's one wall and it's lit properly. A single dark plane recedes visually (dark surfaces read as distance, not mass), and the LED strip tracing its edges makes the wall float off the room rather than press into it. The ceiling, window wall and doorway stay white, so the room keeps its volume while gaining a focal point. Where people go wrong is black on all four walls with no edge lighting — that's a cave, not a cinema.
Gas vs electric for a media wall fireplace — which should I choose?
They answer different questions. Gas (this one) gives real flames, real heat and the most convincing fire — but needs a flue or balanced-flue route, a gas supply, and professional installation, so it suits renovations, not quick wins. Electric gives flame-effect visuals with zero flue work — install is often a stud wall and a socket — and modern units are genuinely good, just not fooling anyone up close. Bioethanol sits between: real flame, no flue, but modest heat and refuelling. If the budget and build allow gas, take gas; if not, a good electric fire in the same black surround gets you 85% of the look.
How high above the fireplace should the TV be mounted?
Lower than instinct says. Measure from the floor, not the fire: the centre of the screen should sit at seated eye level, roughly 100–110cm from the floor for most sofas. With a linear fire below, that typically leaves 20–30cm between firebox and screen — enough separation, close enough to read as one composition. The wall-mounted mistake is treating the TV like a picture and hanging it at standing height; your neck will file complaints by episode two.
Is an 85-inch TV too big for a normal living room?
Almost certainly not — the old "too big" rule died with 4K. At 85 inches, the comfortable viewing distance is roughly 2.7–3.5 metres, which is a standard UK living room. What overwhelms a room isn't screen size, it's bezel and bulk — which is why this design mounts the OLED flush into black panelling: at rest, it disappears into the wall. Measure your seating distance, and if it's over 2.5 metres, 85 inches is not indulgent. It's correct.
